Energy dissipation characteristics of an in-chamber longitudinal culvert system with three-layer side ports designed for a large-scale lock with 60m water head

With the rapid development of water transportation industry in China, scale ships navigating inland waterway is increasing. However, head formed by dams very high, especially for hydroelectric projects constructed upper mountain river. Therefore, it critically urgent to build several high-head and large-scale locks. Moreover, when increased 60 m, huge energy could be generated then introduced into corresponding lock chamber if valve operating time limited. This paper presented in-chamber longitudinal culvert system with three-layer side ports efficiently dissipate ensure safe mooring conditions during a operation. A three-dimensional CFD model 1/4 local region was developed predict its hydraulic behavior. The numerical simulations were conducted examine effect vertical spacing between on dissipation result. Results showed that good performance gained relative set B/D=0.25 (B ports, D inner height culvert). Furthermore, mechanism this arrangement based results characteristic. In addition, result present compared those single-layer two-layer ports. design found best all ports’ cross-section area each keeps same.
